While I am somewhat sympathetic to your point, I would have great
difficulty equating the Mona Lisa to an ASB radar and its antennae,
John. I've seen both up close, and there is no comparison in my view.
I understand that geeks like you and me can go all shivery at the sight
of an unrestored APS-4 like the one they are currently cleaning for the
Hurricane at the Udvar-Hazy museum, but the avionics of WWII, while
sometimes startling examples of breakthroughs in technology, are just
pieces of aluminum and other materials. People don't seem to mourn the
demise of endangered species that are far more precious, so why should
really we mourn the passing of the last ASB on earth, should the passing
even be recognized? To me, it's all about the greater "system", and
that means it's all in your perspective. I would mourn *your* passing,
but not the loss of any of the parts of the "flight deck" I've been
working on for lo these many years. Remember that fire and landfills
have destroyed far more unique WWII avionics than we have ever known to
be damaged by flying warbirds. That reminds me - I need to change the
batteries in the smoke detectors...heh, heh...

It does vary indeed! But that is what I love about this country, and
about this reflector. Lots of different ideas to consider, some to
savor, some to reject, some to put on the back burner for later
reflection. My opinion at any given point in time doesn't make me right
about any single issue, and I try my best to remember that.
But YMMV...:-)
Very 73,
- Mike
