We had a similar program of cannibalization in the US ballistic submarine
fleet forty years ago. Whenever a sub came in off patrol to begin a
one month refit before the next patrol, equipment on board could become
a target for removal and installation on another sub that was close to its
scheduled patrol departure date, but lacked some essential part. The
SIOP-mandated SSBN cold war patrol schedule was a super high priority to
meet. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Integrated_Operational_Plan )

The first 41 US ballistic missile subs were named after famous Americans.
They were called collectively in USN PR material (including posters) the
"Forty-One For Freedom".

There were no "harbor queen" nuclear submarines, so cannibalization
of scarce long-lead-time unique-to-SSBN parts between operational boats
was often necessary. Therefore the slogan above was sometimes claimed to
have changed to "Forty For Freedom and One For Spare Parts".

I remember finding that amusing.
