Well, that all sounds good and dramatic, but the fact is that the Herc and
the Orion are stressed and rated for more Positive and Negative Gs than the
C-54.

The fact is ( I am close to the situation) that the Borate planes are
subjected to huge G loads positive and negative as they penetrate fire
weather and turbulence at low altitudes and then release all of the load
almost all at one time..

The accidents - particularly with the Hercs - have come after bad
maintenance, severe abuse and failure to repair small cracks that appear in
the Spar after all this abuse.

The reality is that all of those glamorous looping and immelmann maneuvers
are really benign low G maneuvers that can be done in a 172 if the pilot is
good.

So, don't ask the Forest Service Pilots.. They are busy flying their Hercs
and wishing they had more of them back....well maintained that is.

Bill

Try that crap in a C-130 Hercules or a P3 Orion and the wings will come off.
Just ask the pilots of US Forest Service "Borate Bombers".

Way back when, they built 'em GOOD at Douglas!
