[Milsurplus] C-54

In the early 1950s I flew with my parents from New York to California on a
Flying
Tigers Airline, C-47 equivalent. The flight included a refuel stop in
Colorado at
a small field with a small building and a gas pump. It wasn't 'torture',
as some
seem to reckon the modern flying experience, but I certainly wouldn't
describe
that flight as being 'comfort and style'.

GREAT VIDEO! I knew a DC-4 had been looped in the 1950s to get out of
a bad situation, but to see it being done at an airshow is awesome.
They are becoming fairly rare, and finding unleaded fuel that is
suitable for big radial engines is a serious problem. In 1967 or 68, a
DC-6 and a Lockheed Constellation were entered in the Reno Air races,
and did better than anyone would have expected. I love the sound of
them, but fear these planes may be having their last hurrah, as the
people who know how to maintain them and certified to fly them are
retiring or dying off. I am very lucky to have traveled in many
classic propeller airliners with gasoline engines, they were from a time
when flying was a treat, enjoyed with style and comfort, rather than the
torture of today's jet sardine cans.
