DC:DC converters are indeed in an ever increasing part of our lives. They employ switching techniques in order to raise efficiency figures to above what a linear regulator can do. However, that comes at a price. The switching is noisy electrically. Generally, use is restricted to digital circuitry, although there may be situations where it would work with linear circuits, but I wouldn't count on it.
