Problem is, Frank, many times there isn't an option to buy American.

In one of the discussion groups, one of the off-topic drifts went to CFLs.

I don't want to drift into the merits or demerits of CFLs, that isn't the point, 
but related, I had read an article about GE closing an incandescent lamp
bulb manufacturing operation in, I believe, Winchester, VA.

I recall that GE had given some thought to converting the plant to manufacturing
CFLs, but GE conceded the US made CFLs would be somewhere 30-40% more
expensive.  They decided they'd not even give it a shot, and therefore, there
simply isn't the wallet option available on this product or for that matter many
others.
