Studies I've seen show roughly the same effect of texting or drinking.

No. If you choose to drink yourself into a stupor at home or elsewhere, I
don't give a damn as you dont endanger OTHERS. Not so if you drive (or
boat or fly)

Actually, I don't care much about modern commo gear. I do object to COTS
test gear.

The 'paying for it' is specious. Do the numbers. I doubt you or my
lifetime contribution to a radio, any radio, would be more than $1.00.

If I were a baddie, I'd buy a COTS Icom or something. If Al Queda wants to
talk to someone remote, they'd use commercial networks.

The only things I'd worry about are NV gear, MANPADS, and CW or BW.

Far more US military have been killed w/ stolen uniforms, etc. than by any
hi-tech stuff.
