Patton did not have "pearl handled" revolvers.  The revolvers had ivory grips.  Patton made it widely known that the grips were ivory and not "pearl".

As for being a "bastard":  He might have been.  But, his troops would follow him to the ends of the earth if necessary!  Unlike most commanders, he often led from the front of his troops rather than from behind the lines.
