Not originally, Robert.  The November 1940 CNO letter is quite specific, 
and it combined a number of separate project names that the NRL was 
running simultaneously, one of which was "Radio Detection".  No clue as 
to when it might have been later changed to "direction" - there is no 
such reference in the book.

The NRL document uses both capitalized RADAR and small letter radar 
(such as radars), depending on context, so John, you need to talk with 
them about your views on proper usage.:-)

Jack, I note that the NRL text records that the British continued to use 
the term RDF until 1943, "when "radar" [sic] was adopted by 
international agreement."  The British television shows are usually 
extremely well researched.
