There is period photographic documentation of the "shielded cable" plugs
being used with laced, open wire.  I have some example cut-offs around
here somewhere.  Darn sight easier to work with.
If you decide to go that way and someone gives you a snooty look,
ask him what *he* has done lately.  He'll probably be real quite after that.
If you do go wire-and-lace, you can find cotton twine that looks right
in the "beads" craft section in Wally World.
