John,
Definitely a confusing and difficult radio to work on. Never tried to
run off battery power myself but just took a quick look at the
schematic. Think I see the dilemma you describe but haven't traced it
all through. Don't forget to look at the PE-104 schematic as well.
There are some jumpers on the -104 connecting socket that could affect
the equation. In the short term you might just take the battery
pinout on faith and see what happens.
Have never laid eyes on an original BA-43 BTW.
