The Canadians built an airliner called the North Star  that was a 
composite of a Douglas DC-4 and DC-6 design, repowered with Rolls Royce 
Merlin water cooled engines.  I think it was the only post WW2 airliner 
with water cooling produced in the Western hemisphere. A friend who 
crewed on them told me they were faster than most other comparable 
planes, and immensely noisier inside and out.
