[Milsurplus] Vintage Radio on Field Day

This grumpy O.M. says forget about multipliers, bonus points and the lot.  That is a contest.  "Field Day" in its true form is a go somewhere else with your stuff set it up and get it working drill.  If you work one station or 100 you have completed the goal of that communication drill.

A few years ago I set up my Valliant along with a R-390A at field day.  The running joke was my RX alone consumed more power than the other full station the club set up including the logging computers.  (at my station we used a paper log!)  Sunday AM the guy running our event came buy for our log.  We had 10 or 12 contacts.  He was puzzled and said is that all?  I told him each contact lasted 30 - 60 min!  Being a serious contest operator he was not impressed but I told him the Field Day goal was accomplished.  We set up in a field, in this case even with vintage gear, made it work and contacted some other stations.  Oh Ya!!! we even had a big heavy old grey navy surplus metal desk but the tractor we used to haul it out to the field was not so old.
