[Milsurplus] B-36

Larry and others: I was associated with the Southwest Aerospace Museum
which had custody of the B-36JIII "City Of Fort Worth", the last B-36 to
come off the line. It was externally rebuilt at General Dynamics, now
Lockhead, all the same plant where the ship was built. At some point after
the rebuild it was transferred to the Pima Air Museum in Arizona, as they
were able to but the aircraft in a building and that was not happening in
fort Worth. The aircraft was and remains property of the USAF, administered
thru External Programs of the Dayton Museum.
I was able to spent a number of hours in and working on the aircraft over
the years, and got to listen to guys that built it and flew in it. They
were all on the ground before I was ever born. The panoramic photos are
outstanding. Our aircraft had very little inside, however the trolley
between the forward section and the rear did work.
Please note that even with only about 350 total aircraft built, there were
mods up to J III (That's 3), and there were RB's: recon birds. Many
different radio installations involved.

Thanks, Steve KB5SMP

I wonder what is happening with the one at Fort Worth? Used to be on the
grounds of the airport but don't know where it is any more or who has
custody of it. Thought i remember hearing Rumors that it was going to be
totally overhauled out at the old Carswell AFB. Anyone with more current
info? I went thru that one back in the mid 70's when they were getting
ready to move it. They were pulling the engines off at that time but i got
to go up into the cockpit area and browse around. Not smart enough at that
time to know what all i would have been looking for/at. May have some
pictures someplace that i took then. Called the "Queen of the sky"..

I remember in the 50's when i lived in western Kansas they would fly over
our town going to or from Wichita. You could hear and feel the rumble of
those low speed props for miles. They seemed to be less than 2000 ft
elevation but i was a kid so what did i know except that it was a B-36!
