Your mention of the farcical Karlson loudspeaker enclosure brought back 
some memories.  Karlson's theory was: you start with a Helmholtz 
resonator, cut a slot down the front of  it of exponentially increasing 
width, and presto! You have a system with the high efficiency of a 
narrowband resonator, but which is completely broadbanded!  Wow, what a 
great idea!  Back in high school I bought a Karlson enclosure kit for a 
15" woofer, thinking it would great for bass guitar.  It took me quite a 
while to figure out why it didn't work as advertized. Man, was I ignorant...
