How about the time a reader asked Tom what to do about the fact that every time she drove through a tunnel, AM radio stations disappeared on her car radio. Tom replied "Stop driving through tunnels. You are a menace to AM radio stations".

I sure do remember it, Dave. That article had to be in the late '60s.

I exchanged emails with Tom a few years ago, right before he died, and he told me a few stories about the wild things they did at EI.

Remember his monthly column, Uncle Tom's Corner? I used to love it. It was the first part of EI I turned to in every issue.

One time, the writer asked Tom about the Standby switch on his Hallicrafters receiver. "I flipped it and it didn't do a thing," the writer complained. "You stood by, didn't you?" Tom replied.

Another time, a writer asked Tom's opinion of the writer's plan to use some kind of whacky and unsafe method to wire his stereo to his speakers. "Make sure the first record you play is the 1812 Overture," Tom replied, "so that the canons can go off at the same time your output transformer explodes."

  Great stuff.
