Teletype Corporation, part of the Bell System, made
most of the machines for the US Army and Air Force.
M-15 was a page printer. Used a roll of "Canary Yellow"
paper. The M-19 used a similar printer, but was primarily
a tape cutter. It used an M-14 on-line tape punch,
and also a Transmitter Distributor "TD" for sending tape.
There was also an on-line tape punch called the
"Iron Mule" (?) About a cubic foot in size and shape.
Kleinschmidt came later. They were were not reliable.
The Brits had some strange looking communications
machines. One came in a large wooden box which was
part of the machine. (Also look for a "YG" beacon ground
station. Aircraft homed in toward it. It's about the size
of two separate shoe boxes. Control Tower may have
had one.)
These all did 60 wpm, but they would do 75 without too
many small parts flying out.
The Teletype Corp M-28 series did 100 wpm very well.
But it was a completely different machine.
Trivia: RYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRYRY
THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPED OVER THE LAZY
YELLOW DOGS BACK 12345678790 TIMES.
The RY's exercised all five bits of the code selector
system. Google ITA #2 for codes. American Standard
Code for Information Interchange, ASCII, used seven
bits. Both five and seven bit codes also had a Start bit
and a Stop bit added at the ends. ASCII came in 1955.
I expect there are a lot of TTY gear in use to this day.
So what I'm saying here is no news to a lot of people.
I was with USAF Communications, by whatever name,
my whole USAF career. ACS, AACS, AFCS, AFCC,
whatever. Retired in '66. Been there, Done that.
Had fun.
Note: In those days, WWII I mean, Control Towers used
whatever air-to-ground radio equipment they could get
their hands on, mostly from aircraft. The SCR-522 was
popular, and would you know, it was licensed by Bendix,
and manufactured in Britain. There were two name tags
on the transceiver case, one was US Army Signal Corps,
the other was British with the Royal HR Coat of Arms.
