[Milsurplus] Cleaning the dreaded soapy white mold

I know this is an old topic but cleaning this stuff just seems to get harder.
Recently I unearthed some items that I had forgotten about and there isa white soapy mold covering plastic handles as well as wire spagetti hoseand plastic buttons. 
Years ago I remember trying some degreasers only to damage the itemsI was trying to clean so I'm hoping to drill down on this a little better thistime.  If anyone has a suggestion, I'd welcome the response.
