The issue would not be sensitivity...a superregen receiver will often
be much more sensitive than a simple superhet.  The RF stage is needed to
aid selectivity and image rejection.  The HF bands during WWII have been
reported as very congested.  A dipole or long wire connected to a simple
superhet like the Howard 430 may therefore have been problematic for
nightly use, every night.

There were many other entertainment receivers that likely performed better
for someone occupied with providing the described monitoring service...
like the 1937 Philco 37-640 (only $69.95, equivalent to $1115 today) that
I fire up every once in a while for the past 30 years.
