I have disposed of many amateur radio estates mostly for free or where
the survivors insist, accept a donation to the national amateur radio
society or a museum with communications interests.

Having a broad background in test equipment sales and an interest in
electronic equipment from the past, it is not too difficult finding
buyers. The easiest disposals are equipment that works and manuals are
included. In some cases, I have sold equipment that I didn't fully check
and had it bounce back. That means it needs to be fixed before its sold
and I still have a few pieces of basement treasures that fall in that
category.

There is a sense of accomplishment with knowing the family can count on
a knowledgeable person to obtain fair market value for something they
know very little about. I feel the same way by not having the gear end
up in a dumpster. I recently heard of a ham who built a push pull
parallel 304tl linear and loaned it out while living in an apartment and
5 years later wanted it to take to a new home in the country. He was
quite irate to find the "borrower" had loaned it and the amateur in
possession passed away and the amp was junked.

As suggested by several on this forum, surplus equipment prices are
quite volatile and age and condition are paramount -the fact they look
good but don't work creates a lot of headaches. Knowing how to dispose
of such equipment comes with experience- just like networking. There are
not only mil collectors but ham radio collectors and vintage radio
clubs. Many have websites where you can advertise, as you probably know.
Grieving families rely on your honesty for these transactions but are
very grateful when the job i done.

Good luck to those who undertake such disposals.

EMC=electromagnetic compatibility means your consumer equipment should function in
the existing enviroment in the manner for which it was designed. If you hear shortwave or broadcast signals while listening to a DVD- what does that tell you?
