     I've been meaning to try, but never did, a half-dipole on the car. 
That is, connect a 1/4 WL wire to the coax center connector on the car body 
and run it at an angle into a nearby tree, etc.  The other half of the 
dipole would be the car body itself, connected through the ground connection 
of the antenna mount.  If you already have a mobile mount on your vehicle, 
you could use a steel whip element as part of the 1/4 WL wire and clip an 
extension wire to the top with an alligator clip.
