When my eldest daughter was about 3-years old, my wife caught her drawing on the walls with crayons.  My wife did not punish her, but carefully explained that one did not draw on the walls.  A few minutes later, my daughter was drawing on the door to her room!  Well, it wasn't on the wall!  My wife then explained that Rebecca was not to draw on anything except a piece of paper supplied by either her mother or her father!

She majored in advertising art in college and became a very successful commercial artist.  A few years ago she broadened her interests into fine arts and has become nationally recognized in fine arts as well as commercial arts.

Here's an example of success...

When my oldest daughter was about 7 she slipped quietly into a recently
white painted basement and used most of the colors in a large box of
crayons on the bright white wall. She would probably have tried all of
them but she got busted (by me). We talked about it and she admitted she
knew she was not supposed to do that. I asked her what she thought I
should do. She was mortified and said that she had a serious spanking
coming. Instead I gave her warm soapy water and a scrub brush and SHE
cleaned every mark off that wall. She thought that was fair.

Today she is 42 and has almost completed the commission for wall murals
in the small town library where she lives with several more lined up.
Her work now is much better than way back then and is more
"appropriate". She also has more than permission... her work is
requested and paid for. She's doing it right.
