Larry,
The circuit was obviously laid out to support a short (read
high-impedance) antenna. ( Like from the cockpit to the tail.) The
suggested mod. will likely improve the situation.
But, my preference would be to keep the radio unmodified, and feed it
from the coax with a broad-band step up transformer. A 1:9 (1:3 turns
ratio) or even 1:16 (1:4 turns) unbalanced to unbalanced autotransformer
is pretty easy to build, once you've broken down and bought some
appropriate ferrite cores. You'll find other uses for them.
