[Milsurplus] Removing potentiometer shaft question

 I'm trying to repair a potentiometer with a stuck shaft.? Solvents and new oil only temporarily loosen it.? It gets stuck again overnight.? 
 
Has anyone discovered a practical way to remove the snap ring that secures a pot's quarter inch shaft so that it can be removed, cleaned, lubed and reassembled?? Is this do-able?? Efforts of mine in the past have only destroyed the ring.?
