The information I learned from five years as an engineering officer
on a submarine with engineering systems almost identical to Thesher's
(no post-Thresher modifications) points to a failed brazed seawater
connection, most likely in the auxiliary machinery space containing all
of the HV electrical switch-gear. There was never any allegation of
improper valve orientation contained in the final investigation results.
