You are correct, of course! You may notice I also ran a nice big heat shrink around the entire cable. This allowed me to retract the cable sheath as much as I wanted and then re-cover it up with heat shrink. See here:

Not to nit-pick Gene, but you rarely have that much lead length between the connector and the cable jacket start.

As to haemostats as a heat sink, that works fine on Teflon insulated wire, but vinyl wire will get permanently smooshed and leave bare wire.
