I have used WD-40 as a cleaner quite successfully to quiet stubborn
noisy pots and switches, and to free up their shafts in the bushings,
but only to clean initially. I then use a solvent to flush the WD-40
out, and then a cleaner/lube intended for pots and switches. Finally, a
small drop of Mobil 1 0-5W oil on the shaft where it enters the
bushing, not inside a pot, but it's fine on the detent balls of a
switch. I have salvaged many scratchy
pots and switches that way, and never had any bad aftermath. Just
regard WD-40 as the first step, and clean it out once things are freed up.
