I used to use Starrett Instrument oil, but I think any oil will, over
time, soften the paint. I've now switched to Renissance Wax, available on
eBay and elsewhere. It has been reccomended to me by a former Smithsonian
museum curator and seems to work well.
On wrinkle finishe4s it is best applied with a very soft buush, then wiped
over later with an old towel.
It seems expensive ($28), but a small can is a lifetime supply.
FWIW,
-John
