Another good book is "The Colditz Story" (sometimes "Escape from Colditz") by Patrick Reid. I read the binding off it in High School. Still have it - stapled together.
They brewed their own "shine" using dried fruit packs from the Red Cross and lead plumbing from sacrificial toilets around the castle. The result was milky white from lead oxide, but settled after a couple of days and they'd decant it.
A movie was made in 1955 and it has a veteran all-star cast (John Mills, Eric Portman, Lionel Jeffries, Ian Carmichael (Peter Whimsey), Anton Diffring (smoothly menacing German officer as always), Theodor Bikel). Very abridged, but the highlights they used were true to the book. DVD is pricey and I have a VHS version I take care of.
Cheers!
