I fondly remember discovering the book in high school. I was so engrossed with it that I was caught reading it in history class instead of doing my assignment. My history teacher caught me but really didn't mind because we were studying WW2 at the time.
The radio was not a "Foxhole" blue-blade crystal set but a tube rig. The prisoners blackmailed a guard into supplying them with essential articles. He even provided them with a camera in order to take photos for their fake ID cards.
I was very disappointed with the film. In order to cater to a the American audience they added American characters such as Steve McQueen and James Garner. I guess McQueen was hot at the time so they added that ridiculous motorcycle scene at the end.
I recommend reading the book. I've reread it many times. As usual, the book is much better than the film.

The article mentions batteries and a muffin tin. Was this a tube rig?
I have seen reproductions built in canteens so as to disguise them as regular gear.
Cheers!
