Heh, heh...that's a good question, John.  See

midway down on the right hand side.  The problem with using the knurled 
type of collet that the guitar tool represents is that the internal 
knurling isn't always the right number of serrations per degree around 
the periphery, and they can damage the nut.  A properly tensioned smooth 
collet has a significant gripping power, at least in my experience.  You 
see some of the accidents I've had in my early years with cutting tools 
getting loose and digging into the metal workpiece...never had any 
slippage of the collet though.
