[Milsurplus] Retransmission Question

Speaking Post WWII, I have used the retransmission function (labeled
"RELAY") to link helicopters and other aircraft to over the horizon shore
based facilities. The system was UHF/UHF and the aircraft I was in was a
E-2B Hawkeye. Once the link was established (frequencies assigned) the
operation was automatic and hands off for me. I could still monitor and talk
on either frequency.
