Todd, you are absolutly right, I have a perfect example of this.
More than 10 years ago when I was researching my first Clough-Brengle
transmitter and finding nothing at all, suddenly one day a listing for
"Clough-Brengle Papers" showed up on ebay. 
It was listed be a lady that had bought a box of old papers at an auction.
Among the papers was a envelope containing original Clough-Brengle
blue prints and a couple typed pages of tuning instructions for the
model 4581 the very transmitter I own. The seller was going to just toss
most of the papers in the trash, her husband suggested she list the
items on ebay and see what happens. 
This paper is the ONLY original Clough-Brengle factory other than
the schematic that's glued inside the top cover.
It could have been trashed and it would just be gone, but luckily I was
there at the right time and snagged it.
