Interesting.

When did they start painting them? I tried using one as a detector on the 1960's and had no luck. I went back to my 1N34 and 1N48's.

The original "blue blades", the type used in World War II, were "heat treated" which resulted in the blue color and the usefulness as a detector.  Unfortunately, more "modern" of the "blue blades" just have a thin coat of paint which, in turn, does not make for a good electrical connection.

Some people have had good luck just taking a single edged blade, letting it get rusty, and then using it as the detector.
