The original "blue blades", the type used in World War II, were "heat treated" which resulted in the blue color and the usefulness as a detector. Unfortunately, more "modern" of the "blue blades" just have a thin coat of paint which, in turn, does not make for a good electrical connection.
Some people have had good luck just taking a single edged blade, letting it get rusty, and then using it as the detector.

Thrift shops and yard sales, 25-50 cents a pack. Don't forget to ask your
elderly neighbours, I was at a friends house and saw some laying around.
