de Clete,
I was told by a German ham in 1946 that only those applicants
who were selected to be licensed could operate. I was told that
all was a matter of party affiliation. Germany never was 100 per
cent National Socialist, and the party did screening. They always
were limited to 50 Watts, and he had a trunk full of QSL cards.
This was in Berlin, just a bit outside the big city. From 1946 to
1948 I never encountered any German pre-war ham radio equipment.
That was in Berlin and in Northwest Germany. We were licensed
as D4AVM and D4AAW, but the Germans were not on the air yet.
I have some good war stories, all very true, but some of them I don't
even believe myself. Good thing I was in a freewheeling communications
unit. Them were the days. We had BC-610 and AR-88 and BC-779.
