With radios like the Hallicrafters RE-1 Sky Courier and the Zenith Trans- Oceanic available and for ground use and the Navy Crosley REO and REP other than wanting to build something to fill in the time between duty why would anyone want to build a radio that's had no sensitivity or selectivity and would require a long wire antenna? The uses of a canteen radio is well documented in the Philippines along with similar types of radios used in POW camps and somehow think that became the idea that started the idea of a Foxhole radio. But that's just my speculation.
