I managed to recover a paintless SCR-183 transmitter plate by
giving it a good coat of gloss black. Then, when it was well
cured (3-4 days), I used a tiny tab of 800 grit waterproof sandpaper
and gentle, gentle WET sanding pressure to remove the paint
from the raised areas. It took a few tries to learn
how to get it "right."
Practice on an old plate somewhere.
It's tedious and takes awhile, but I know of no other way.
One "down side:" If you have a plate with that thin, thin
silver nickle coating on the letters, they are going to be
plain brass-colored when you're through. I don't see
how you can save the nickle coating. If you get this right,
you could always have it re-plated.
