I've got a Mark I* and a Mark III in my collection.  The WS 38 is a clever
design, but it's much more awkward than the US SCR-536 (BC-611).  Both sets
probably worked equally poorly!  The USMC reported the SCR-536 as useless
in the jungles of the Pacific theater.  I doubt the WS 38 was any better.
