There was also an intermediate in the transition from AM to SSB. RCA commercial SSB-1 transceivers were installed on many ships before being replaced by WRC-1 or URC-32.

The URC-8 looks like the missing link. Somehow the TCS just stayed in service over a long period of time until the wide deployment of the SSB WRC-1
