Mike,

Actually, you were half-right on point # 1 both times.  Or if you prefer, 
you were right both times.  :-)  Apparently, either after the manual went to 
print, or from the beginning but it didn't make it into the manual, the 
modified BC-348-Q became R-584/MRC-20 and the modified BC-348-R became 
R-389/MRC-20.  Someone on one of these lists has or had at least part of one of the 
latter. 

The manual's primary number is TM 11-692.
