At the time that the AN/MRC-20 was put together, those were about the
best aircraft-type MF/HF, VHF, and UHF sets available anywhere.

It made sense to put them together in a package that could be installed
in a truck or jeep. The main thing that it is missing is tactical
ground VHF-FM, but I suppose most aircraft of that era did not carry
such sets (except for those A.R.C. Type 12 installations with the BC-1335-A
designed for light observation aircraft in ground-support roles.)

I just dug out my manual for the AN/MRC-20 (T.O. 31R2-2MRC20-1, 1 DEC 1953,
revised 15 NOV 1955) and I see that I got two strikes against me with my
last post. Here are the corrections:

(1) The receiver is the R-584/MRC-20, *NOT* R-589/MRC-20. (The
manual says that this is a modified BC-348-Q or -R. An external
two-tube noise limiter and squelch circuit is the main distinction
     from a standard BC-348.)
(2) It does NOT have a coax RF connector.

I have most of an R-584/MRC-20 in storage. (Its dynamotor is missing.)
It's a modified BC-348-Q model, with the external SQ/NL box.
