Just got back a short time ago.... tired.
My feet hurt and I'm horse ;-).
Our efforts on the display were rewarded-
it was well-received. More later.
But on the subject at hand:
We must accept that we are never going to know with certainty
every way a set was or was not used. People improvised.
They failed to document. They created documents for systems
that were never actually fielded or, if they were, they were
"boogered" left and right to make them work.
Remember how many times over the couple of decades of
our wonderful group, someone in good faith has made a
blanket statement that later turned-out to be wrong:
"The AMA was never made."
"The TBY was only used by infantry."
"The GT/RBD was never a Command Set."
"The SCR-194/-195 was never in combat."
"The SCR-288 was never deployed."
"VHF replaced HF in aircraft."
"SCR-183 was a failure."
"Fighter aircraft in the Pacific never used HF."
"No way SCR-287 or SCR-274N got installed in a boat."
and there are many more. All of these statements were
made in good faith, based on the best information available
the to poster at the time, and all of them were wrong.
There will be more, and we need to be understanding.
Ignorant Authority has destroyed our most important
sources of information. Memoirs are inconsistant
and contradictory. Witness data is dying out
and covered with a thick patina' of age.
Memories have been "over-sprayed" by Father Time's graffiti.
For instance:
I don't think the old fellow at the display today
who insisted that Wireless Set 19 was installed
in Bell Aircobras bound for Russa was lying;
Time had just had its way with his memory,
as is sure to happen to all of us.
All we can do is the best we can do.
And remember that often-repeated
yet sage advice: "Never say Never."
