Bruce Gentry KA2IVY, sent me this email
concerning 400 cycle transformer
substitution and I thought I would share it.

Bruce said:
"For most applications use a 60 cycle transformer.
There is no problem
using them on 400 cycles, but the output voltage
may sag some under
heavy load because the reactance in the winding
will be higher at 400
cycles. It's best to try to find one with the
largest number of thin
laminations as opposed to one with fewer thicker
ones. If the
laminations are too few or of poor quality, the
core may get hotter than
desirable from excessive eddy currents. There is
no harm in trying, any
overheating will occur rather slowly and give
plenty time to shut it off
before any damage occurs. I have never had a
problem." Bruce Gentry

I've tested several 60 cycle transformers this
PM and found them to be satisfactory
for my low power instrument testing. No heating
and no excessive current draw on
the input to the 60 cycle transformer. Again this
is for a test lash up and not continuous
duty and high power.

I guess I did not do too well in AC theory 202.
