Now for the big daddy whiskers:
Back in the late '80s, early '90s. I was working with a noise team at the Navy DF site (FRD-10) at Skaggs Island, CA. One noise source was determined to be from the PG&E substation feeding the base. Subsequent investigation by their noise people found whiskers growing on the 2" aluminum tubing which was the switch arm on the primary side inputs. They cleaned them and coated them with something, and all was quiet for the next few years until the site closed. The whiskers were not visible from outside the enclosure fence which was as close as I dared venture.
