[Milsurplus] [Fwd: [Boatanchors] solder whiskers grow on "non lead" solder]

When I was growing up I lived near NYC and all TVs had electrostatically
attracted soot and dust in them. It would crackle and arc over if not
cleaned periodically. Even the face of the CRT would get a layer of
black soot after a short while.
My first exposure to whiskers was in computer rooms with a galvanized
floor structure. Cool air was blown in the floor up into equipment
racks and there were failures due to shorting in our voice response
system due to this. I left that company shortly thereafter so never
heard if there was an ultimate solution such as filtering, but I do know
IBM had all sorts of grief with it as well.
