I believe you have two completely different songs confused. "They've got
an awful lot of coffee in Brazil" is from the "Coffee Song", recorded by
the Andrews Sisters and others. The "Rubber Tree Plant" song you
mention is almost certainly "High Hopes", recorded most famously by
Frank Sinatra. I was at Apex in 1988, and was more than a little
concerned about an earthquake. The best thing I found and bought were
several 845 tubes, the price was reasonable. Because I was visiting, I
couldn't ship much more back here to Syracuse without spending a
fortune. Until the early 1990s, Central Electronics in Utica was the
regional surplus dealer. They got most of their stuff from General
Electric and the nearby Griffiss Air Force base. The proprietor was
(in)famous for his foul humor, many people refused to go there more than
once because of it. With the destruction of the American consumer
electronics industry and the end of the cold war, the supply of new
stuff dwindled to near zero and all the good items were gone. He sold
everything left to some place near Rochester and closed up. Here in
Syracuse, we have two local electronic component suppliers, one of them
fairly well stocked and with very knowledgeable staff, and the other
managing to keep the doors open. With all of them in New York City gone
now, the closest real surplus store is Fair, Lima is about 10 hours
from here if the weather is good and traffic in Cleveland is favorable.
Do any of you watch the TV show"Glee"? It is set in Lima Ohio, and has
several techie nerds in it, but none of them have ever mentioned Fair
Radio.
