I believe you have two completely different songs confused. "They've got 
an awful lot of coffee in Brazil" is from the "Coffee Song", recorded by 
the Andrews Sisters and others. The "Rubber Tree Plant"  song you 
mention is almost certainly "High Hopes", recorded most famously by 
Frank Sinatra.  I was at Apex in 1988, and was more than a little 
concerned about an earthquake.  The best thing I found and bought were 
several 845 tubes, the price was reasonable.  Because I was visiting, I 
couldn't ship much more back here to Syracuse  without spending a 
fortune.   Until the early 1990s, Central Electronics in Utica was the 
regional surplus dealer. They got most of their stuff from General 
Electric and the nearby Griffiss Air Force base. The proprietor was 
(in)famous for his foul humor, many people refused to go there more than 
once because of it. With the destruction of the American consumer 
electronics industry and the end of the cold war, the supply of new 
stuff dwindled to near zero  and all the good  items were gone.  He sold 
everything left to some place near Rochester and closed up.   Here in 
Syracuse, we have two local electronic component suppliers, one of them 
fairly well stocked and with very knowledgeable staff,  and the other 
managing to keep the doors open.  With all of them in New York City gone 
now, the closest real surplus store is Fair,  Lima is about 10 hours 
from here if the weather is good and traffic in Cleveland is favorable.  
Do any of you watch the TV show"Glee"? It is set in Lima Ohio, and has 
several techie nerds in it, but none of them have ever mentioned Fair 
Radio.
