[Milsurplus] Why lamp dimmers on ground radios?

If you're in a combat situation, and you might have to go outside and it's night, you would want to have at least a little of your night vision. And a good sailor can sleep ANYWHERE, anytime, lights or no. Personal experience.

  Why would a ground radio like the BC-312 have a lamp dimmer?
  Or a ship radio such as RBC? I think on the 0400-0800 watch you 
  wouldn't want to get too relaxed and comfy!
