Most likely a thermocouple type ammeter in which the RF current heats a
wire which has a thermocouple in close physical contact. You then have two
isolated circuits. One carries the RF current and the other a voltage in
proportion to the RF current. Either the thermocouple itself or the meter coil
is open.

Subject: [Milsurplus] RF ammeters
Jogged my memory: I have a blown one in my BC-375. I get full output (55W
'phone) per my outboard watt/SWR meter but the needle is dead. Meter shows
continuity. Were these designed to short when they blew so you weren't SOL?
Schematic shows it in series w/the antenna output and no apparent bypass.
Cheers!
