I encountered the vibrator contact problem in the 1950s while resurrecting radios for my automobile experiments, and the lamp method of cleaning them very shortly thereafter.  The thing which has always amazed me is that the sulfur in the rubber has been known to cause the problem for 50+ years, yet the very latest vibrators I have seen still use the same product for noise control, and with the same ultimate contact contamination problem.  Any I open, I discard the rubber and replace it with polyurethane.  Anyone else tried that?
